Unity Solar & Utilities (Pty) Ltd — POPIA Compliance
Unity Solar & Utilities (Pty) Ltd is the Responsible Party under POPIA for personal information processed through UnityPay. Our Information Officer is responsible for ensuring compliance with POPIA.
We collect the following personal information: mobile phone number (for authentication), name, email address (optional, for receipts and alerts), electricity consumption data from your meter, payment transaction records, and device authentication credentials (passkeys).
Your personal information is processed to: authenticate your identity and secure your account; manage your prepaid utility account and wallet; process payments and issue VAT receipts; send low-balance alerts and payment confirmations; comply with SARS tax record-keeping requirements.
Processing is based on: performance of your utility account contract; compliance with legal obligations (SARS 5-year financial record retention); and your consent where required.
Financial records (ledger entries, payment transactions, VAT invoices) are retained for 5 years as required by SARS. Personal identification information (name, phone, email) is retained for the duration of your account. Upon account deletion, PII is anonymised while financial records are retained.
You have the right to: access your personal information; correct inaccurate information; request deletion of your personal information (subject to retention obligations); object to processing; and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.
We share your information with: Paystack (payment processing); Africa's Talking (SMS notifications); Resend (email delivery); PNPSCADA (meter data provider). We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
We implement industry-standard security measures including encrypted sessions, WebAuthn passkey authentication, and encrypted data transmission. Financial data is stored on secured Supabase PostgreSQL infrastructure.
We use a single session cookie (httpOnly, SameSite=Strict) for authentication. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
